Making the most of a spare bedroom
If you’re lucky enough to have a home with a spare room, you’ll want to make the most of it. But chances are, it’s currently very under-utilised. So how can you make the most of the space? We aren’t just talking about setting it up on AirBnB, although if you want to make some extra money have the right kind of layout with a separate guest bathroom it could be worthwhile. We’re talking about ways that you can enjoy it and actually use it – so your house is completely your home.
Creating a versatile space is most important if you’re going to actually use the room as more than just a guest room. Think about choosing a nice day bed, perhaps with a roll out underneath to create ample bedding for guests, without looking like a bedroom. This means that you can put a TV on the wall, put down a rug and some cushions and create another quit space for watching TV or install a bookshelf across one wall and it becomes a lovely reading room.
Make the most of storage – but create some more
Use the storage. Unless you have guests coming for excessively long periods of time, you don’t need to give them an empty closet. Instead, use it for yourself but use stacked boxes or secure shelving units to store things and save a small amount of hanging room (about 20cm of rack) for them to use and set up an external set of drawers so the built ins are saved for storage. This way they have somewhere to store their belongings when they visit, but you don’t have to forego all of that storage space.
Your needs don’t have to come in last
If you want a study desk, put it in. If you want to set up an art, craft or sewing station, do it. Use things like old fashioned desks with roller doors that close to store belongings and create a multifunctional space that you can use with ease, but guests can also enjoy without feeling like they’re intruding.
Create a space you love
Most importantly, just because you aren’t living in the space 24/7, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice beauty. Place a triple scented candle somewhere and some scented reeds to create a pleasant environment. Use beautiful linens and piled cushions to make it comfortable. Consider lighting just like you would any other bedroom giving it enough natural light to make it an airy space with enough window dressings to black it out and most importantly, make it a reflection of you.
